Whenever friends visit us from overseas and are planning their first trip to America, Cape Charles is one of the places I always recommend.
A few years ago, one of our close friends from Germany and Austria came to visit us after we had spent time traveling with them in Europe. They wanted to experience more than just the big-name destinations like New York City and Washington, DC. So after showing them some of the classic East Coast stops, we brought them to Cape Charles.
And honestly? It ended up being one of their favorite parts of the trip.
Our connection to Cape Charles actually started years ago when my father-in-law moved to Virginia’s Eastern Shore and bought a farmhouse dating back to the 1700s. Since then, we’ve spent countless weekends crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, visiting family, exploring the area, and finding new reasons to fall in love with this little town.
What started as family visits became one of our favorite weekend getaways.
And after visiting beaches all over the East Coast, I genuinely think Cape Charles is one of the prettiest beach towns in Virginia.
The white sand. The warm, calm bay water. The golf carts. The historic homes. The incredible sunsets. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you arrive. Since I grew up on the East Coast in Virginia Beach, in my opinion, the weather is even slightly better here in the summer because the Eastern Shore gets the BEST sea breezes – there’s always a good breeze even on a hot summer day. There’s just something in the air that makes it SO relaxing there.

Cape Charles sits on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, tucked along the Chesapeake Bay just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
One of the reasons I love recommending it is that it’s surprisingly accessible for a weekend getaway or a 1-2-day stop.
For international visitors flying into the East Coast, it’s an easy addition to a Washington DC, Virginia Beach, or Williamsburg itinerary.

The beach feels completely different from the typical Atlantic coastline (and I grew up in Virginia on the coast!). In my opinion. It’s the prettiest beach in Virginia because of its calm clear water and white soft sand. Because Cape Charles sits on the Chesapeake Bay, you’ll find:
✔️ Warm water
✔️ Calm waves
✔️ Shallow swimming
✔️ Soft white sand
✔️ Stunning sunsets
As a mom, I love that my kids can splash around without dealing with rough surf or strong currents.
And unlike most East Coast beaches that face east, Cape Charles faces west, which means sunset after sunset over the water. It’s one of the most underrated sunset spots on the entire East Coast for a quiet and classic beach town getaway.
The most popular season.
Perfect beach weather, warm water, golf cart rides, outdoor dining, and ice cream every night.
This is when the town is at its liveliest.
One of my personal favorite times to visit.
Everything is green, flowers are blooming, temperatures are comfortable, and the crowds haven’t fully arrived.
Arguably the best-kept secret.
The bay water stays warm, crowds disappear, and you still get beautiful weather.
September in Cape Charles is magical.
Quiet and peaceful.
Many visitors come specifically for cozy weekends, historic inns, and relaxing small-town vibes.
One of the things I love most about Cape Charles is that it hasn’t been taken over by giant resorts and chain hotels.
Instead, you’ll find charming Airbnbs tucked into historic neighborhoods, beautifully restored cottages, beach bungalows, and small bed-and-breakfasts that feel like they belong in a Nicholas Sparks movie.
Whenever friends visit, I always recommend finding a quaint Airbnb or locally owned inn within walking distance of downtown. Being able to bike to breakfast, walk to dinner, and stroll to the beach is part of what makes Cape Charles so special.
The town is full of:
Many are within walking distance of both downtown and the beach.
If you’re planning a couples getaway, there are several charming bed-and-breakfasts that perfectly match the town’s relaxed atmosphere.
My recommendation? Skip the chain hotels and stay somewhere with character.
Cape Charles is one of those places where the accommodations become part of the experience.

Of course, spending a day at Cape Charles Beach is reason enough to visit. It’s the main attraction, and for good reason.
Spend the day swimming, paddleboarding, reading, or simply enjoying one of the calmest beaches in Virginia. The warm, shallow water makes it perfect for families.
But one of the best things we’ve done over the years is get out on the water. Recently, we went boating with our friend Anna, and I genuinely could not believe how many dolphins we saw. We live in Coastal Virginia and spend plenty of time around the water, but I have never seen that many dolphins in one outing, and at one point, it felt like they were everywhere around us.
One of the best sunset spots in town. The views across the Chesapeake Bay are beautiful. It is often much calmer than the ocean, which creates ideal conditions for dolphin cruises, boating, and paddleboarding. If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, I highly recommend booking a dolphin sightseeing tour or renting paddleboards through Poseidon Watersports. It’s one of those experiences that both kids and adults talk about long after the trip is over.
Cape Charles is made for wandering.
Expect:
One of my favorite things to do is simply stroll around with an iced coffee and see what catches my eye.
Cape Charles is incredibly bike-friendly.
Many rentals even include bikes, making it easy to explore town.
One of the most iconic Cape Charles experiences. Everyone seems to get around by golf cart. It’s part of the charm.
Cape Charles is also a wonderful town to explore by bike or golf cart. Half the fun is simply wandering through the historic neighborhoods lined with Victorian homes, colorful cottages, wraparound porches, and beautifully maintained gardens.
Right in the middle of town, you’ll find Central Park, which is one of our favorite family-friendly spots. There is a large playground, tennis courts, open green space, and during the summer months, a fountain splash area where kids can cool off. It’s a great place to take a break from the beach while still enjoying the outdoors.
The park includes:
Perfect for burning off kid energy after a beach day. A hidden gem for families!
Another spot that deserves more attention is Kiptopeke State Park. Located just a short drive from Cape Charles, it offers another beautiful stretch of beach, peaceful walking trails, a playground, fishing opportunities, and plenty of space to explore. It feels quieter and more natural than many beach destinations, making it perfect for anyone looking to escape the crowds.
Even if you’re not boating, it’s worth visiting.
The marina is one of the social hubs of town and a great place to watch the sunset.
Some favorites include:
It’s the kind of downtown where every storefront feels worth stepping into.
@kellyyhill The most MAGICAL MOMENT!!😭😭🌊🐬✨ can’t believe we call this home?!! #travel #beachlife #dolphins #virginiabeach

These are the places we find ourselves returning to again and again.
One of my favorite things about Cape Charles is that, despite being a small town, the food scene is genuinely excellent.
Waterfront dining, sunsets, and great seafood all in one of the most popular spots in town.
For lunch or dinner, our family always ends up at The Shanty at least once. Located right on the waterfront, it’s one of the most iconic restaurants in town, perfect for watching boats come and go while enjoying fresh seafood and bay views. Bonus points if you arrive by boat 😉 .
Great for a nicer dinner with fresh seafood and a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re looking for a relaxed pub atmosphere, make time for E&O, another local favorite.
A destination restaurant that’s absolutely worth making reservations for. Another longtime favorite is The Oyster Farm Seafood Eatery, which offers some of the best seafood in the area and feels like a true destination dining experience.
Start your morning at Coastal Baking Co.
This place is AMAZING – our favorite breakfast stop.
I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s one of the best bakeries on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Everything we’ve tried has been incredible, and it’s the kind of place where you walk in intending to grab one pastry and leave with a box full of things you couldn’t resist.
Order a coffee, sit outside, and don’t rush. They even had various things for the kids to entertain themselves with while we ate!
Perfect for a casual afternoon beer and local atmosphere. Very family-friendly and lots of space!
And no trip to Cape Charles is complete without ice cream.
Our family is split between Brown Dog Ice Cream and Cowlick’s Creamery. The correct answer is probably to visit both and decide for yourself.

A Cape Charles institution.
Expect a line during summer weekends, but it’s worth it.
My favorite Cape Charles evening involves grabbing ice cream, walking to the beach, and watching the sun set over the Chesapeake Bay.
Simple, but perfect.

The funny thing about Cape Charles is that there isn’t one major attraction that defines it.
It’s the feeling. It’s kids riding bikes until dark. It’s neighbors waving from golf carts. It’s quiet streets lined with historic homes. It’s warm bay water and sunsets that never get old.
It’s grabbing pastries from Coastal Baking Co. in the morning, spending the afternoon paddleboarding in calm bay water, watching dolphins surface nearby, riding golf carts through town, and ending the day with ice cream. At the same time, the sun sets over the Chesapeake Bay.
It’s kids playing in the splash fountain at Central Park. It’s long walks on white sand beaches.
It’s bringing friends from Germany and Austria here and watching them fall in love with a side of America, they never expected to see: a slower, simpler, more charming version of coastal life.
And it’s the reason that even after years of visiting family on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Ever since my father-in-law moved into that 1700s farmhouse, we still look forward to every trip and find ourselves planning our next one before we’ve even left.
If you’re looking for a peaceful beach getaway, a charming weekend escape, or simply one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Virginia, Cape Charles deserves a spot at the top of your list.
Pro tip: If you’re already planning a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Washington DC, or doing a larger East Coast road trip, add one or two nights in Cape Charles. It might just end up being the place you remember most, and don’t be surprised if one weekend turns into a yearly tradition. 🌊☀️🤍
