Puerto Rico is truly one of our favorite places in the world, and not just as a vacation destination.
Before we were married, my husband actually lived in Rincón for a year, working as a school counselor and surf instructor. Even before that, he had been visiting for years and completely fell in love with the island.
Then we moved to NYC, got married, traveled all over the world, but Puerto Rico was always the place we came back to.
Now, with kids, it means even more. We’ve always pictured our family growing up coming here, returning every year, knowing the beaches, the food, the culture.
If you’re planning your first trip, this Puerto Rico travel guide and 10-day Puerto Rico itinerary will walk you through exactly how to experience the best of the island, from San Juan to Rincón to Culebra.

Before you even land, Puerto Rico already feels easy in the best way. There’s something about it being a U.S. territory that removes a lot of the stress of international travel, but once you arrive, it still feels like you’ve stepped into a completely different rhythm of life.
It’s one of those places where things just flow. Beach mornings, long dinners, spontaneous stops along the road, and understanding a few basics ahead of time makes the whole trip even smoother.

One of the biggest reasons we love Puerto Rico is how easy it is to get to, especially for U.S. travelers. It’s one of the few Caribbean trips where you can leave in the morning and be in the ocean that same afternoon.
Most flights land in San Juan, which makes it the perfect starting point for your itinerary.
Quick tips:
The first time we came with a full island itinerary, we quickly realized something: Puerto Rico is meant to be explored by car.
San Juan is walkable and vibrant, but once you leave the city, the real magic of the island opens up with surf towns, hidden beaches, roadside food stands, and drives that feel like part of the experience itself.
What to know:
We’ve been at all different times of year, and honestly, there’s never a bad time to go, just different versions of the island.
Winter feels like peak magic with perfect weather and surf, while spring or fall feels quieter and more local. Summer is especially peaceful, (but very hot and humid, so something to keep in mind!)
Best time to visit:

Puerto Rico feels incredibly welcoming for English speakers, but Spanish is still the heartbeat of daily life.
We’ve always found that even just a few words go a long way, and locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
Tips:
One of the easiest parts of traveling here:
This is something we get asked a lot, especially traveling with kids.
In our experience, Puerto Rico feels very safe for families and travelers, especially in the areas included in this itinerary. Like anywhere, you just stay aware, but overall it’s been one of the easiest destinations we’ve traveled to repeatedly.

Packing for Puerto Rico always feels like packing for a version of life where you’re outside 90% of the time. It’s simple, beach-focused, and easy, but there are a few things that make everything smoother.
We always pack light here. Most days are beach-to-dinner-to-back-to-beach again.

Over the years, we’ve tried both staying in one place and moving around, and the version we always come back to is this: you move with the island and kind of overall trip you want.
Puerto Rico is small enough that you can see so much, but diverse enough that each region feels completely different.
Here’s how we naturally structure every trip now:
Once we started traveling this way, it completely changed how we experienced the island, making it more like an adventure than just a stay on the resort all week type of vacation.

Where you stay in Puerto Rico honestly becomes part of the experience itself. Each region has its own personality, and over the years we’ve stayed in everything from boutique hotels to beachfront Airbnbs that we still think about.

San Juan always feels like the easiest landing point of the trip, the heart and soul of the island, the place where you arrive, adjust, and immediately get pulled into color, music, and food everywhere you walk.
We usually split our stays here between classic hotels and Airbnbs depending on the trip vibe.
Where we love:
We’ve also stayed in Old San Juan Airbnbs that feel like living inside a postcard, think balconies overlooking colorful cobblestone streets, morning coffee with ocean air, and everything walkable.
Rincón is the version of Puerto Rico that stays with you long after you leave.
It’s slow, warm, unpolished in the best way, and deeply tied to surf culture and sunsets that feel unreal with a palm tree lined backdrop every single night.
We’ve spent a lot of time here over the years because my husband lived here, and it still feels like a second home.
Where we’ve stayed:
Airbnb stays in Rincón:
Some of our favorite stays in Puerto Rico have been here, oceanfront villas with open-air layouts, private pools, and sunsets you don’t have to leave your house for.
Isabela feels like the quieter, more tucked-away version of the west coast.
Less touristy than Rincón, more local, and incredibly peaceful in a way that surprises most people.
Where we stay or recommend:
We honestly think this is one of the most underrated places to stay on the island.
Airbnb option:
Isabela also has a lot of minimal, modern surf casitas that feel airy and calm, perfect for slow mornings and beach days.
I don’t see enough people talking about this place – it is truly like no other place we’ve been. La Parguera is less about where you stay and more about what you do while you’re there.
It feels like a working coastal town with boats everywhere, local food, and the most unique water experiences on the island.
Where to stay:
After multiple trips, we’ve realized we use both for very different reasons.
Hotels give you:
Airbnbs give you:
Some of our best memories have honestly come from waking up in Airbnbs in Rincón with no agenda other than coffee and the ocean.
This itinerary is built around the way we actually travel the island, with slow mornings, long drives along the coast, and switching between cities and nature.

San Juan is the perfect entry point into Puerto Rico. It eases you in while still giving you so much to explore right away.
Old San Juan especially feels like stepping into a different world with its colors, history, and energy.
Boutique hotels or Old San Juan Airbnbs
Top pick: Hotel El Convento or a Airbnb right in the heart of the city
This is where the trip slows down and shifts into beach mode.
We usually decide between Rincón and Isabela based on surf and how much movement vs quiet we want on that trip. If we want to stay where there is more going on, more restaurant options, and more nightlife, we choose Rincón. If we want a more classic Puerto Rican stay that is quieter and laid back, we choose Isabela.
Rincón:
Isabela:
Jobos Beach in Isabela is one of our go-to spots with kids because it is calm, easy, and very accessible, with restaurants lining the beach, and a fun surf break.
Each town has their own “art walk” every week. It’s every Wednesday in Isabela, and every Thursday in Rincón. We LOVE to go and check out all the local Puerto Rican artists and artisans and food vendors with live music. It is truly a fun local experience to get to know the towns and community, with lots of festivity!

A completely different side of Puerto Rico which is water-focused, local, and unforgettable at night.
Parador Villa Parguera
This is the day you’ll rent a boat to explore the mangroves, find little sand bars to jump in and swim, and in the evening check out the bioluminescent magic.

Culebra feels like the most “escape” part of the trip. It is a small island right off of Puerto Rico with the best beaches in the Caribbean. This is your true remote island getaway.
Flamenco Beach, snorkeling, and slow beach days
End where you started for an easy departure and one last walk through the city.

Puerto Rico is one of the best Caribbean destinations for a reason because it’s beautiful, diverse, and incredibly easy to travel.
Whether you’re planning a family trip, a couples getaway, or a surf-focused adventure, this island truly has something for everyone.
And once you go, you’ll understand why we keep coming back every single year.
@kellyyhill Save for your next trip 🌺🌴🐚 some of our absolute favorite spots across the island over the years – this island has SO much to see and do, it’s a treat to experience more than just one spot or one beach 🏝️ #puertorico #caribbeantravel #familytravel
